What else should I know about banner sizes?

Banner size isn’t all about width, height and presentation.  It is also about bytes.  Very large graphics can take a considerably long time to download; publishers do not want their websites slowed down by advertiser banners. It is important that your banners have a fast download speed, preferably less than 3 seconds for a 460 x 60 full banner when using a speed of 128k or faster.  A good banner designer will always check actual size in pixels, and actual size in kilobytes during a test exportation of a banner.  This is one of the difficulties banner designers often
face.  Creatively artistic banners have to be designed within the limitations of both size and speed, for a banner to be widely acceptable and versatile.  Often a designer will initially produce a stunning, eye catching banner design, but will have to perform many variations on the original design, before arriving at a stunning, eye catching banner which performs satisfactorily. Static banners rarely cause problems for banner designers, however animated banners can present much that must be overcome.

When creating animated banners it is best to work with a maximum of 3 frames, but this will vary depending on the amount of content each frame is carrying. So when attempting to design your own banners, be certain to run a test exportation of your finished piece and check that the pixels size is in accordance with standard sizes, and that your banner downloads within 3 seconds using a 128k speed or faster.  If it doesn’t, then perform alterations to your design, until you are confident that your finished banner meets an acceptable and welcomed size.
